SHALIMOV Alexander Alekseevich  (1918-2006)

Academic of NAS and NAMS of Ukraine, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Medical Sciences, State Prize Laureate of USSR and Ukraine, chief surgeon of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Hero of Socialist Labor, Hero of Ukrain.

Alexander Shalimov was born in January 20, 1918 year in the large family of peasants in the village Vvedenka Lipetsk region.

The family had 11 children and adopted two more homeless. In 1925 the family moved to the Kuban, the farm Zvezdilin Natyrbovskoho area. Here A.A. Shalimov began to attend school.

                            

In 1934, A.A. Shalimov entered to the Cuban medical college, which graduated in 1936 with honors. In the same year he joined the Kuban Medical Institute. During the graduation exams started the Second World  War. Last exam on surgery he passed is ahead of schedule. From 1941 to 1944  A. Shalimov was chief physician and surgeon in Nerchinsk-mill hospital Chita region. In 1944, a young surgeon moved in Petrovsk-Zabaikalsky region for the post of chief physician, head of surgical department.

In 1946, A.A. Shalimov began to work in the Bryansk regional Hospital, and soon in Bryansk arrived another famous surgeon N. Amosov. For both period in Bryansk became a school of higher skills in surgery. For a number of years between two talented and motivated surgeons continued competition, aimed at improving professional skills.

 

From that period of Bryansk school got a whole galaxy of renowned surgeons such as O.M. Avilova, D.C. Skobelin, I. Dedkov et al.

In 1949, A. Shalimov was appointed as a chief surgeon and head of Orlovsky regional hospital surgical unit.

 

However, in 1953 after moving to N. Amos to Kyiv A. Shalimov returned to Bryansk. Here A. Shalimov engaged in scientific research. The subject of PhD thesis was defended in 1955,  “A. Shalimov own methodology for esophagoplasties”. The circle of his scientific interests are not limited to this problem. Of particular interest he shows to the surgery on the stomach, esophagus, lung and pancreas.

 

        

In 1956 the Kharkiv period begins. Initially, he was elected assistant professor of Surgery of the Kharkov Medical Institute, and after defending the doctor of medicine thesis "Surgical treatment of cancer of head of the pancreas and papilla Fateri" from 1959 he headed the department of thoracic surgery and anesthesiology in Ukrainian Institute of postgraduate study.

        

After the creation in 1965 of the Kharkov Institute of General and Emergency Surgery A. Shalimov appointed its director and head of the department of the Thoracoabdominal surgery. Years of work in Kharkov was a period of formation of A. Shalimova as a scientist. His interest  were  surgery of the digestive system, heart, great vessels, anesthesiology and others.

 

  

 

1. Shalimov improving  surgery of the lungs, heart and blood vessels. He designed  his original apparatus with artificial circulation, dilatator for mitral komisurotomi, a number of devices and instruments. He also published many books, reflecting the large clinical experience of the author.

 

       

From 1970 Shalimov works in Kiev. Initially, he was elected head of the Department of thoracoabdominal Surgery, led the surgery department of the Kiev Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, and for the short period was a  director of this institute.

  

Since 1972, A. Shalimov heads the Kyiv Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery, creation and development of which took place under his leadership.

 

 

In 1976 A. Shalimov appointed as a main editor of "Clinical Surgery".  And in 1980 - chief surgeon in the  USSR Ministry of Health.

 

 

Among the many problems whose solutions were successful scientists of the Institute under the direction of A. Shalimov, one of the most important is the development of methods for surgical treatment of stomach ulcer and duodenal ulcer. 

 

"For every patient – its individual operation"- a credo teacher has become a cornerstone for many students and followers A. Shalimov.

 

At the Kiev Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery, particularly in managed by A. Shalimov department successfully developed the reconstructive surgery of bile ducts, portal hypertension and other.

Big attention A. Shalimov paid to the blood vessels surgery. He is considered one of the founders of the vessels surgery in Ukraine. At the Kiev Institute ofClinical and Experimental Surgery was open vascular surgery department, which soon became a Republican.

With the name of A. Shalimov related development in Ukraine microsurgery.
In 1979, on the basis of vascular surgery department was created one of the first branch of the USSR in microvascular surgery. In managed by A. Shalimov Institute for the first time in Ukraine successfully started develop an endovascular surgery.

 

In 1978, A. Shalimov elected academician of USSR. He was elected as a member of parliament during 22 years, chairman of the Ukrainian Scientific Society of Surgeons, a member of International Society of Surgeons, - this is not a complete list of his public positions and responsibilities.

          

In 1988 he was appointed as a honorary director of the Kiev Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery.
