Institute of Surgery and Transplantology of Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) of Ukraine is multiple-discipline research entity. It takes the leading place in Ukraine on the problems of working out of the brand new technologies in the field of surgery and transplantology and the application of these technologies into practice. It is a well functioning methodological center on the most important problems of surgery and transplantology. The institute is the main organization of Academy of medical sciences and Ministry of public Health of Ukraine on the problems of surgery and transplantology.

The main directions of scientific and clinical activity of the Institute are

• The development and improvement of the new methods of diagnostic and surgical treatment of diseases of
   - gastrointestinal tract;
   - biliary tract and pancreas ;
   - liver, portal hypertension and its complications;
   - hearts, aorta and main vessels;
   - diseases and defects that could be treated by means of microvascular surgery and plastic surgery technique organs transplantation (heart, liver, kidneys);
• introduction of the methods of prophylaxis and treatment of the severe postoperative complications (pulmonary tromboembolism, peritonitis, sepsis) ;
• problems of hospital infection ;
• development of new implants, suture materials, alternative methods of tissue connection, surgical instruments ;
• Development of miniinvasive methods of surgical operation (endovascular, endoscopic), methods of cavities puncture under the control by means of ultrasound and X-ray

Institute of surgery and Transplantology of AMS of Ukraine was created in the 30Th of May, 1972. Those days the name of it was the Kiev Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery of Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. The Institute was established on the basis of the department of the Kiev Institute of Hematology and blood transfusion Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine.

The initiative of the Institute creation and the special role in its coming into being belong to its first director, the Hero of a Socialist work, Honored worker of science and engineering of Ukraine, winner of the State premiums of Ukraine and USSR, Honored doctor of Russian Federation, academician National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and AMS of Ukraine A.A.Shalimov. He permanently headed the Institute during 16 years, and nowadays he is its honorary director. Talent of the scientist, high proficiency of the versatile surgeon has permitted A.A.Shalimov to create the unique scientific entity and the collective of the enthusiasts of the disciples that deeply and comprehensively study the problems of clinical surgery.

Since 1988 the institute is headed by the disciple of the academician A.A.Shalimov, the Honored Worker of science and engineering of Ukraine, corresponding member NAS and AMS of Ukraine, winner of the State premium USSR the professor V.F.Saenko. His activity is marked by creation of the new trends of surgery, the new subdivisions and labs of the Institute, the development of special comprehensive programs on the most actual problems of surgery and their implementation, reorganization of the chair of toraco-abdominal and vascular surgery of Kiev Medical Academy of Postgraduate training, by many achievements, the main of them were dilating a volume of the qualified surgical help.

In 2000 according to decision of the Presidium AMS of Ukraine the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery was reorganized into the Institute of Surgery and Transplantology that has permitted to expand the range of its scientific and practical activity.

The creation of the Institute became an outstanding landmark in the development of surgical science and surgical school in Ukraine. Its characteristic feature is versatility and exclusive breadth of problems that are worked on, the development of scientific and practical problems of surgery in the combination with the high specialization. All of it is being improved in accordance of the new trends and technologies in surgery appearance.

For 30 years Institute has transformed into powerful scientific and clinical centre. Today in the Institute work: one academician, one corresponding member of NAS and AMS of Ukraine, 16 doctors and 40 candidates of sciences. The institute has its own clinic with 420 beds and consulting polyclinic. For years of existence of the Institute the employees have performed about 123 000 operations.

In the Institute there were defended 85 doctoral and 217 candidate thesises. There were printed 78 monographs, more than 5000 scientific works, there were obtained 450 copyright certificates on the invention and patents. There were prepared for the practical public health services more than 7000 doctors. Many of the former employees of the Institute are the Head of the institutes and the chairs in Ukraine and countries of CIS.

5 employees of Institute had been awarded with the state premium of the USSR, 19 -with the State premium of Ukraine, 6 -with the title " the honored Worker of science and engineering of Ukraine ", 11-with the title" the Honored doctor of Ukraine ". Several workers are marked with the state awards for their scientific works.

According to recent trends of the development of surgery in the last years in the Institute were created the departments of kidney transplantation and haemodialysis, transplantation of heart, liver transplantation, and immunology. For the first time in Ukraine there were carried out such operations as transplantation of heart, liver transplantation from the live donor. The kidney transplantation is performed permanently.

The institute as a main establishment for the term of its existence has proposed important initiatives concerning improvement of the condition of the surgical help to the population of Ukraine. The main directions of the organizational initiatives were a specialization of the surgical clinics, introduction into practice of public health services monitoring researches and methods of treatment.

With the help of the Institute there were created the vascular surgery departments in all the regions of Ukraine and Sevastopol as well, the centers for the treatment of the patients with the gastrointestinal bleeding, destructive forms of pancreatitis, and the departments of microvascular surgery.

The specialized academic council on the doctoral thesis protection was created in 2000 and now functioned successfully. Institute as a leading entity on a problem "Surgery" works as the co-coordinator of scientific researches, scientific - methodical and organizational activity on the surgery in the country.

The considerable attention is given to the preparing of scientific staff of a top level for public health services of Ukraine. The improvement of professional skill of the surgeons from the public health services, their familiarization with the new technologies of diagnostic and surgical treatment are accomplished on the courses in the Institute, and also by means of congresses, conferences, seminars of the surgeons organization and carrying out. During the realization of scientific researches the Institute co-operates with the leading institutes of NAS and AMS, surgical chairs of the Kiev Medical Academy of Postgraduate training, scientific centers of Germany, Japan, Czech, France. The multiplane integration has permitted deeply and comprehensively to solve delivered problems, and in such a way to increase the theoretical and practical level of scientific researches. In addition to a large research work the Institute gives the highly qualified help to the patients in leading clinics and as early as on the time of the stage of a coming into being it was generally recognized in the country and abroad.

Further scientific researches, development and introduction of the new technologies of the modern surgery and the transplantation, expansion of contacts with the scientists of Ukraine and foreign countries will provide the creation of the favorable prerequisites for the development of surgical science, implementation of its achievements into practice of public health services, that could help to improve the quality of the treatment.
